- Grasp the shower arm firmly with both hands.
- Turn counterclockwise until the shower arm comes out of the wall.
- Remove the shower ring.
Tip:
If you are running into difficulties removing your shower by hand, using vise grips to clamp around the shower arm will help give you the leverage you need to remove it. If your shower ring does not slide off easily, try using a box cutter or knife to remove it.
Having troubles with this step?
I’m turning my shower arm as hard as I can, and it will not move.
If you are unable to remove your existing shower arm by hand, your shower arm is likely installed a bit too tightly. Don’t worry. The pipe is removable, and here are some methods to try to get it off:
- Use an internal pipe wrench to get a better grip on the shower.
- Use a metal lubricant (like WD-40) to loosen a frozen connection. You’ll first need to spray the lubricant into the threads and let it sit for ~1 hour. Next, you will need to turn the pipe clockwise and counterclockwise for the lubricant to work its way deeper into threads. You may need to reapply the lubricant here so it can work its way deeper into the threads, waiting again before you’re able to move the pipe.
- Ask a friend or family member to lend you a hand to get some extra leverage.

The shower ring is stuck. How do I remove it?
If the shower ring does not slide off easily, you’ll need to remove the caulk holding it in place. Use a knife or box cutter to pry the shower ring from the wall.
